China classifies 16% of its soils and 19% of its agricultural soils as contaminated. There are approximately 3 million potentially contaminated sites in the European Economic Area and Western Balkans. The United States has more than 1,300 contaminated sites on the Superfund National Priority Treatment List. Australia has about 80,000 soil contaminated sites. Soil contamination problems are more severe in low- and middle-income countries.
